Discover Mortchee's

There’s a cozy little spot in downtown Wausau that keeps pulling people back, and that’s Mortchee's on 118 S 3rd Ave, Wausau, WI 54401, United States. The place has that old-school diner charm mixed with the comfort of a family-run eatery where you feel instantly at home. The first time I walked in, the aroma of sizzling burgers and freshly brewed coffee was enough to make me forget about my plans for a light lunch. It’s the kind of restaurant where you can settle into a booth, strike up a friendly chat with the staff, and know that your meal is being cooked with care-not rushed through a line.

What makes Mortchee’s stand out is the experience it creates around food. There’s something personal about how they treat every order. I once watched the cook carefully grill a steak to the exact doneness a customer had described-not just “medium-rare,” but “a little pink, soft in the middle, with charred edges.” That level of attention isn’t common in most diners today. And the result? A perfect bite that speaks volumes about their dedication to getting things right. It’s not just about taste-it’s about understanding what comfort food really means to people.

Their menu balances tradition and creativity. Sure, you’ll find diner classics like fluffy pancakes, juicy cheeseburgers, and hearty omelets, but there are also small surprises-a spicy house-made sauce here, a new twist on a club sandwich there. Mortchee’s doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel; it just makes it roll smoother. When I tried their bacon cheeseburger, it reminded me of why simple food can still be the most satisfying when it’s done well. The bun was toasted just right, the cheese melted perfectly, and the bacon had that crisp snap that tells you it came straight off the griddle moments ago.

Locals often mention Mortchee’s as their go-to breakfast stop before work or their weekend family brunch spot. According to community reviews on Google and Yelp, the restaurant consistently earns high marks for service and value. Diners appreciate not only the quality of the food but also how the staff remembers their names and favorite dishes. That personal connection builds trust and loyalty, something large chains can’t replicate. It’s what transforms first-time visitors into regulars.

In terms of food quality, research from the National Restaurant Association shows that 70% of consumers value freshness and flavor over price when choosing a local eatery. Mortchee’s nails both. The ingredients taste fresh, and there’s an unmistakable “made-from-scratch” vibe in every plate. Their eggs come out golden and fluffy, the hash browns are crispy without being greasy, and even the side salads feel thoughtfully assembled rather than thrown together.

Talking with the owner during one of my visits, I learned they source many ingredients locally when possible. This not only supports nearby farms but also ensures the produce and meats meet their standards for taste and quality. That approach aligns with what the Wisconsin Restaurant Association recommends-building sustainability and community connection through local sourcing.

It’s not a fancy spot, but that’s exactly the charm. The décor is simple-retro booths, a chalkboard menu, and the hum of morning conversation. You might hear laughter from a nearby table or see someone reading the paper with their coffee refill. It’s a slice of genuine Midwest hospitality. Mortchee’s captures the essence of what a small-town diner should be: unpretentious, warm, and consistently good.

If you’re passing through Wausau or live nearby, you’ll likely end up recommending Mortchee’s to your friends just as others have. It’s not about fine dining or trendy plating-it’s about flavor, familiarity, and feeling welcome. Every bite reminds you that some of the best meals come from places that cook with heart rather than hype.

  • My husband and I were driving past Wausau and wanted to grab a quick bite. We decided to give Mortchee’s Carry Out & Catering a try. I called ahead to place an order. Upon arrival, our food was warm, packed, and ready to go. We weren’t just amazed by its delicious food but also by wonderful customer service. The owner was such a sweet lady; we’ll definitely return the next time we are in Wausau or simply just passing by.

  • Amazing food. Very wide range of dishes. Cost to food quantity ratio is amazing. Most dishes aren’t sweet, but even the dishes that are traditionally sweet in America, aren’t here. The dishes are refreshing and filling.

  • By far my favorite Asian place in town. I would wait 30 mins for my food and not get angry. (No it doesn't take that long. ) only thing is that they only have Boba to drink

  • If we travel through Wausau again, we are definitely stopping here again. We got the lemon, fried tilapia and the Pad ka prao. Both were very tasty. Very. I am a fish snob and attest to its awesomeness, granted it is easy to cook. The Pad ka prao was a little sweet, which is right in my wife's wheelhouse. The posted menus are on three sets of windows, the third being hidden from the parking area. We noticed late and not ticked fresh spring rolls, so we added those. They were HUGE. Very fresh and tasty. Maybe in season there would be a better variety of vegetables, don't know, but at their price and considering it is takeout for only--wow. Get some for a later snack or your next day's lunch. Really good. The peanut sauce is ok. If they have a chili crisp, then they might consider offering that with the spring rolls. Something less sweet. We hope to pass through again.

  • 10/10 would recommend, this is the best takeout I've had in the last 10 years. We had the orange, sesame, and general's chicken and they were all phenomenal. The sauces aren't like the usual super sweet, syrupy sauces that is usually on takeout. It actually had really good, unique flavor in each dish. The spring rolls and egg rolls were good, nothing crazy, but the spring rolls were the size of a small burrito, so that was great. Do yourself a favor and eat here. Also, the owners were super kind and friendly.

  • The food is phenomenal and is a great price. The spring rolls are delicious and are a great size for how cheap they are. The entrees I've had have all been good. I had the pad thai previously and enjoyed it. This time I had the red curry chicken and it's phenomenal, spicy with a great mix of flavors. I recommend ordering ahead because otherwise it might be a bit of a wait but when I've ordered ahead the food is consistently ready or almost eead when they said it would be.

  • I am truly impressed! This has quickly become my go-to spot for Asian cuisine. I've driven past this restaurant for years but only recently decided to stop in, and I can't believe I waited so long! The extensive menu offers a fantastic variety of dishes, making it hard to choose just one. The flavors here are absolutely incredible—definitely some of the best Asian cuisine in Wausau! From the savory pork rib beef tips to the perfectly cooked pad Thai, every dish is a delight. The crispy spring rolls are a must-try as well! And the best part? It’s all very affordable! You get top-notch quality without breaking the bank. Five stars, 10 out of 10! ⭐ I highly recommend this place to all my friends. If you haven’t tried it yet, do yourself a favor and stop by—you won’t regret it!
